Most of that risk isn’t snow or ice. FHWA’s rain and flooding data shows that 75% of weather-related crashes happen on wet pavement. 47% happen during actual rainfall. Rain and mist alone make up more than 77% of all weather-related crashes nationwide.
NOAA is the country’s top weather research agency. Its climate data shows the Gulf Coast sits inside one of the most thunderstorm-prone regions in the country. Here’s why that matters for drivers. When it rains hard, water usually runs downhill into ditches. But flat land has nowhere for water to go. That’s why roads like Airline Highway, I-10, and I-12 can flood fast during a normal afternoon storm. Low spots near the Amite River and Bayou Manchac are known for this too.
Standing water on flat highways can make tires lose grip with the road. This is called hydroplaning. It’s a real risk for big rigs and 18-wheelers moving fast on I-10 or I-12.
Long, Straight Roads Can Make Drivers Tired
Central Louisiana has long, flat highway stretches. This includes the area around Alexandria and Pineville, especially along I-49. Roads like this don’t have many turns or hills.

It found that 13% of commercial truck drivers were considered fatigued at the time of a serious crash. That’s a big reason FMCSA sets strict “Hours of Service” rules. These rules limit how long truck drivers can be on the road without a break. Long, flat, repetitive highways make staying alert even harder.
Bridges Over Water Are Extra Dangerous
This is one of the biggest differences between our area and most of the country. In many states, running off the road means landing in grass or a ditch. Around Baton Rouge, Ascension Parish, and the River Parishes, running off the road can mean going into water.
A local example: the Sunshine Bridge and the Horace Wilkinson Bridge.
Drivers who cross the Sunshine Bridge near Donaldsonville know these crossings don’t leave much room for error. The same is true for the Horace Wilkinson Bridge, also called the Baton Rouge Bridge, over the Mississippi River. There’s little to no shoulder.
