Yes, roundabouts are safe for semi-trucks, most of the time. Federal safety data shows they cut serious crashes by more than 80 percent compared to old-style intersections. But trucks are big, and not every roundabout was built with them in mind. Here in Baton Rouge and Ascension Parish, where new roundabouts keep popping up, that gap matters. If you have ever slowed your car and held your breath while a semi wide-turned through a traffic circle, you already know why.
Why Roundabouts Are Showing Up All Over Louisiana
Louisiana has built about 174 roundabouts since 2003, and Ascension Parish just added another one. The Federal Highway Administration calls roundabouts a “proven safety countermeasure.” That is a fancy way of saying the data backs them up. Converting a stop-sign intersection to a roundabout cuts fatal and injury crashes by 82 percent. Converting a signal-light intersection cuts those same crashes by 78 percent.
The Simple Reason They Work
A roundabout forces every car to slow down and move in the same direction. That one change removes the crash types that hurt people the most. There is no more left turn in front of oncoming traffic. There is no more T-bone crash at a red light. Cars flow around the circle like water around a rock, instead of crossing paths at full speed.
But Semi-Trucks Change the Math
A roundabout has to be built for the biggest vehicle that might use it. That is federal design guidance, not just an opinion. Engineers add a raised ring around the center island called a truck apron. It lets a semi’s trailer wheels roll over that ring while the cab stays in its own lane. On two-lane roundabouts, a truck may need both lanes just to make it through the turn. One federal study found that four out of ten drivers felt confused at two-lane roundabouts, and a good chunk of that confusion was about how to share space with a big rig.
Who Actually Gets Hurt
Here is the part that should give every driver pause. In 2024, 5,340 people died nationwide in crashes involving large trucks. Only 17 percent of those people were riding in the truck. The rest, 62 percent, were in passenger cars, and another 19 percent were walking, biking, or riding a motorcycle. When a truck and a smaller vehicle collide, it is almost always the smaller vehicle that loses. That is true on the interstate, and it is true inside a roundabout near your neighborhood.
In my office, I have sat across from families who were hurt at intersections that were supposed to make them safer. Roundabouts do lower the odds of a serious wreck. They do not remove the danger completely, especially where trucks and cars are still learning to share the circle. If you drive through a roundabout in Baton Rouge, Gonzales, or anywhere in Ascension Parish, give a semi extra room.
A few habits help:
- Stay back from the truck’s blind spots on both sides.
- Never try to pass a truck while you are both inside the circle.
- Expect a truck to swing wide before it exits, and let it use the truck apron.

Quick Answers
Are roundabouts safer than regular intersections for trucks?
Yes, in most cases. National data shows roundabouts cut fatal and injury crashes by roughly 80 percent compared to standard intersections, even with trucks in the mix.
What is that raised ring in the middle of some roundabouts for?
It is called a truck apron. It gives a semi’s trailer extra room to turn without the truck driving over the curb or into oncoming traffic.
What should I do if a truck hits me inside a roundabout in Louisiana?
Call 911, get medical care, and call an attorney before you talk to the trucking company’s insurance adjuster. Evidence at a roundabout can disappear fast.
