Most schools in Louisiana will start the new school year by Thursday, August 14, says the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission (LHSC). This means school zones will be active again for the first time since May.
School Zone Times
School zones help keep students safe. The times can be different in each area. But usually, school zones are in effect from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays. Drivers need to look out for signs showing the exact times.
“Students are getting ready for school, and drivers need to get ready too. Slow down in school zones,” said LHSC Director Lisa Freeman.
Be Careful Around School Buses in Baton Rouge and Gonzales
Drivers must be very careful when they see a school bus. If a bus has its red lights flashing and stop signs out, drivers going in the same direction must stop. Sometimes, drivers going the opposite way also need to stop:
- On two-lane roads: All cars must stop.
- On three-lane roads with a turn lane in the middle: All cars must stop.
- On four-lane roads with no divider: All cars must stop.
- On divided highways with a grass median or barrier: Only cars behind the bus stop. Oncoming traffic keeps going carefully.
- On roads with a center turn lane and two lanes on each side: Cars behind the bus stop. Oncoming cars go with caution.
Fines and Penalties
If you break the rules, you can get a ticket.
- Using a handheld phone in a school zone can cost up to $500.
- Passing a stopped school bus can cost up to $500 and might even get you up to six months in jail.
As school starts, slow down in school zones and stop for buses. Small actions keep kids safe. Corzo Injury Attorneys reminds you: safe driving protects everyone.
