How Much Louisiana Motorcycle Insurance Do I Need?

June 3, 2025  |  Firm News by Chris Corzo Injury Attorneys

Louisiana requires all motorists, including motorcyclists, to have liability insurance coverage to pay for damages caused to others in an accident. However, the required amount of coverage may not be adequate if there are severe injuries.

How Much Insurance Coverage Does Louisiana Require For Motorcyclists?

Louisiana requires all motorcyclists to purchase liability coverage in the following amounts:

  • $15,000 for bodily injury per person per accident.
  • $30,000 for bodily injury for two or more people per accident.
  • $25,000 for property damage per accident.

These minimum amounts can quickly be exhausted in any severe accident. If you are at fault in an accident and the damages exceed the amounts provided by your insurance policy, you will be personally responsible for all excess damages.

What Happens If I Don’t Carry the Required Amount of Louisiana Motorcycle Insurance?

If you are at fault in an accident and do not carry the required liability coverage, you will be personally liable for all damages. You could be responsible for paying for medical expenses, lost wages, and other damages caused to the injury victims.

Due to Louisiana’s No Pay, No Play Law, you will be unable to recover damages for the first $15,000 of bodily injury damage and the first $25,000 for property damage.

You may also be fined and have your license revoked for failing to maintain the required coverage. Riding uninsured can also affect your ability to find motorcycle insurance in the future.

What Additional Louisiana Motorcycle Insurance Should I Consider?

If you are financing your bike, you will also be required to have comprehensive and collision coverage for your motorcycle. However, even if your bike is paid for, it’s wise to have this type of coverage.

Additional types of coverage you should consider purchasing include payment for medical expenses incurred by you or your passengers, roadside assistance, and rental coverage.

Comprehensive motorcycle coverage may pay for damages to your bike caused by theft, vandalism, fire, and weather conditions. Collision motorcycle coverage pays for damage to your bike if it is damaged in a collision with another vehicle or object, no matter who is at fault.

You may also purchase uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage to protect yourself if you are injured in a motorcycle accident caused by someone else and they do not have adequate coverage to pay for your damages.

How Much Does Louisiana Motorcycle Insurance Cost?

How Much Does Louisiana Motorcycle Insurance Cost?

The cost of motorcycle insurance coverage depends on numerous factors. Premiums can be influenced by:

  • Where you live matters. Living in an area with higher rates of accidents or crime may result in more expensive premiums.
  • Your age matters. Generally, younger riders pay higher premiums.
  • Your credit score may matter. If you have a good credit score, it may help you secure a lower premium.
  • The type of motorcycle matters. If your motorcycle has a larger engine, it may be considered a higher risk, and therefore, coverage will likely be more expensive.
  • Your driving record matters. If you have a good record, your insurance may be lower than if you have accidents and traffic violations on your record.

It is essential to shop around and compare different types of coverage, as well as their costs.
