What does binge drinking mean?
Binge drinking happens when a woman has four or more drinks, or a man has five or more drinks, at one time.
What does heavy drinking mean?
Heavy drinking is when a woman has eight or more drinks a week, or a man has 15 or more. The CDC says most people who drink heavily also binge drink.
Why is this a problem?
People who binge drink have a higher risk of health problems. Drinking too much can cause cancer, high blood pressure, heart and liver disease, strokes, memory loss, and mental health issues.

Which parishes drink the least and most in Louisiana?
Some parishes report fewer adults who binge or drink heavily:
- East Carroll and Madison Parishes – 15%
- Tensas Parish – 16%
- Bienville, Claiborne, Lincoln, and Webster Parishes – 17%
Other parishes report higher drinking rates:
- Ascension and Lafayette Parishes – 23%, the highest in the state
- Beauregard, Cameron, Jefferson, Jefferson Davis, Livingston, Orleans, St. Charles, St. Tammany, and West Feliciana Parishes – 22%
